English Composition

Course Number:  #200

Length of Course:  1 Trimester – ˝ Credit

Prerequisites: A required course to follow English IA and B, but having no set prerequisite.  Admission to English III will require passing English I, II and English Composition for the Class of 2011 (present 8th graders)

Grade Level:  9

This course is designed to improve student writing through direct instruction in, and practice of, rhetorical modes of exposition (narration, description, persuasion, etc.) and characteristics of good writing (organization, voice, word choice, conventions, etc.).  Composition students will be required to write a number of pieces that focus on these elements.  Because conventions and word choice are factos that contribute to good writing, grammar and vocabulary will also be emphasized in this course.

 

Myths

Prerequisites:  English III

Grade Level:  12

This course is designed to present a wide variety of myths, exploring the beliefs and values of ancient peoples from all continents. Students will study similarities and differences among cultures with respect to creation tales and hero epics. 

 

English I

Length Of Course: 2 Trimesters - 1 Credit

Prerequisites:  None

Grade Level:  9

English I is a survey course designed to acquaint the student with the major areas of English. Specifically, the course will include areas of grammar, the short story, non-fiction, drama, poetry, and the novel. In addition, students will complete a research paper as well as a formal speech. 

 

Speech

Course Number:  #221

Length Of Course: 1 Trimester – ˝  Credit

Prerequisites:  English III

Grade Level:  12

Students participate in a variety of informal speaking and listening situations designed to show how the communication process works. The class emphasizes the public speaking and interpersonal communication skills used for problem solving and discussion in business and at home. Exams include both written and performance sections. 

 

 Honors English I

Course Number:  #203-204

Length Of Course: 2 Trimesters - 1 Credit

Prerequisites:  Application

Grade Level:  9

This course is designed for students who have demonstrated superior reading and writing skills at the Middle School. The intent of this course is to give students accelerated preparation in the fundamentals of interpretation of both fiction and nonfiction. Most reading selections are one year above grade level. Formal writing is comprised of both analytical and creative work.  Summer reading is required.  Students must submit an application essay, score successfully on the entrance test, and agree to all course requirements as detailed on the course outline.

 

Dramatic Readings

Course Number:  #227

Length Of Course: 1 Trimester – ˝ Credit Prerequisites:  English II (Students can take concurrently with English II)

Grade Level:  10 – 12

Dramatic Readings will introduce students to a

variety of dramas from various cultures and eras. In addition to the reading of these works, the class will study the various techniques

of drama, from ancient Greece to modern experimental theater. Subjects such as stage direction, lighting, costuming, props, and characterization will be included in the study of each work. Students will be able to understand the development of drama through time and have an increased appreciation for "live literature." Practice in appropriate dramatic reading and play writing will also be included in the course.

 

English II

Course Number:  #205-206

Length of Course:  2 Trimesters – 1 Credit

Prerequisites:  English I

Grade Level:  10

English II, a survey course, develops a student’s ability to read and analyze fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and legends.  The class also includes Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and a novel.  English II students write business letters, a research paper, and several short, expository

papers.  Two short oral presentations are a required part of the class.

 

Advanced Placement English

Course Number:  #229-230

Length of Course:  2 Trimesters – 1 Credit

Prerequisites:  English III or Honors English III, Application (Application on Page 36, due February 28, 2007)

Grade Level:  12

The focus of this course will be the careful study and analysis of works by major English authors.  Preparation for and practice on the Advanced Placement Examination will also be included.  Students enrolled in this course will be expected to complete independent summer assignments, including reading and essay preparation.  Students must submit an application essay, score successfully on the entrance test, and agree to all course requirements as detailed on the course outline.

 

Honors English II

Length of Course:  2 Trimesters - 1 Credit

Prerequisites:  Honors English I suggested, Application (Application on Page 36, due February 28, 2007)

Grade Level:  10

As a foundation, a variety of materials are used, suited to the more sophisticated reader.  Students are taught to be conscious of a writer’s strategies and voice as well as the content of the work being analyzed.  In written work, students are expected to establish a thesis, provide textual proof, and supporting warrants in analytical papers.  Assignments are usually focused on a single work, although some comparative studies are also done.  Summer reading is required.   Students must submit an application essay, score successfully on the entrance test, and agree to all course requirements as detailed on the course outline.

 

Short Stories

Course Number:  #215 – Even Years

Length of Course:  1 Trimester – ˝ Credit

Prerequisites:  English III

Grade Level:  12

This course is designed to extend students’ experience in fiction and non-fiction.  Fiction texts include stories from diverse cultures.  Non-fiction selections are drawn from Work:  An Anthology of Workplace Literature.  Students will use their reading as a springboard to fictional and analytical writing.

 

English III

Course Number:  #209-210

Length Of Course: 2 Trimesters - 1 Credit

Prerequisites:  English II

Grade Level:  11

English III is a survey course centering around American Literature’s historical development, emphasizing authors of the various periods in American history. Formal speech work will be emphasized as well as several writing assignments. A research project and critical essay are required.

 

World Literature

Course Number:  #220 – Even Years

Length Of Course: 1 Trimester – ˝ Credit

Prerequisites:  English III

Grade Level:  12

World Literature will focus on important literature from around the world. This literature will be read, discussed, and studied in light of the culture and region from which it comes, with an emphasis on understanding and appreciating universal human concerns, themes and ideals. The class will also examine the similarities and differences of diverse cultures in western and non-western societies. 

 

Honors English III

Length of Course:  2 Trimesters – 1 Credit

Prerequisites:  Honors English II and/or Entrance Test, Meeting Honors/AP Criteria, Application (Application on Page 36, due February 28, 2007)

Grade Level:  11

Honors English III is a pre-AP English course, designed to enhance the skills obtained in Honors I and II, and build a strong foundation for success in the AP English class and on the Advanced Placement English Exam given in May of each year.  Close analysis, extensive writing, and intense class discussions will provide students with the opportunities to deepen their ability to understand, analyze, and interpret literary works.  Students must submit an application essay, score successfully on the entrance test, and agree to all course requirements as detailed on the course outline.

 

British Literature

Course Number:  #216 – Odd Years

Length Of Course: 1 Trimester – ˝  Credit

Prerequisites:  None

Grade Level:  12

The approach to literature is historical as it is related to the social, economic, political, religious, philosophical, cultural, and scientific movements of its time. The

writing is a combination of creative and analytical assignments suited to preparing for college. Major writers covered are Chaucer, Shakespeare, Bacon, Milton, Poe, Defoe, Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Tennyson, Browning, Shaw and Joyce. 

 

Journalism

Prerequisites:  English III (Students can take concurrently with English III)

Grade Level:  12

This publication class begins with a history of journalism and its ethics.  Students write news, sports, and feature stories as well as editorials.  They practice interviewing techniques, proofreading, layout design, photography, and cartooning.  Deadlines are an important aspect of this class.

World Humanities

Course Number:  #222 – Odd Years

Length of Course:  1 Trimester – ˝ Credit

Prerequisites:  English III

Grade Level:  11 – 12

This course is for juniors or seniors incorporating the discipline of literature, art, and music as they connect with their specific place in history.  This class focuses on the contributions of western civilization beginning with ancient Greece and finishing with the Middle Ages.  Heavy emphasis is placed upon writing and class discussion in support of the material studied.
