Business

Students are required to have ½ credit of computers for graduation.
This can be fulfilled with Computer Applications, Business Technology or Multimedia.
Business courses (above the ½ credit computer requirement) will count toward the elective graduation requirement.

 

Computer Applications

Course Number:  #102

Length of Course:  1 Trimester – ½ Credit

Prerequisites:  None

Grade Level:   9

This course will provide students with thorough instruction of multimedia presentation applications, advanced word functions, on-line learning, ethical usage, the use of spreadsheets, and desktop publishing.  Students will also be instructed in the use of scanners and digital cameras and their application in the aforementioned software.

 

Accounting I – Computerized- BMA

Course Number:  #117, #118, #119

Length of Course:  3 Trimesters – 1-1/2 Credits

Prerequisites:  None, Small Business Accounting Recommended

Grade Level:  11 –12

This course prepares students for entry-level accounting/finance positions. It provides a good background for students pursuing college degrees.  Learn basic methods of keeping financial records for single owner businesses and partnerships.  Learn accounting and business terminology, hands-on experience using the computer keypad, the electronic printing calculator, Excel spreadsheets and Automated Accounting applications.  Employability skills, job shadowing experiences, and interschool activities such as the Business Bash are also included.  This course is very demanding and includes a moderate amount of homework.  Students earning a “B” or better could possibly qualify for college credit as determined by the instructor. (An EFE course).

 

Marketing I

Course Number:  #105, #106, #107

Length of Course:  3 Trimesters – 1-1/2 Credits

Prerequisites:  None

Grade Level:  11 – 12

This course covers selling, entrepreneurship,  cashiering, advertising and display, basic marketing principles, customer/human relations, retail economics, career exploration and on the job skills.  This is an excellent course for students that are both college and career bound.  Three KVCC college credits will be given for successful completion (B or better) of three trimesters of Marketing I.  Students will have the

opportunity and will be encouraged to participate in DECA.

 

Business Technology – BMA I

Course Number:  #124, #125, #126

Length of Course:  3 Trimesters  – 1-1/2 Credits

Prerequisites: None

Grade Level:  11 – 12

This course will prepare students for success in today’s high-tech business careers.  Instruction includes advanced procedures in Microsoft Office (MOS) for certification training in the work environment, corporate structure, portfolio development, professional attitude, business communication, leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.  Also included are telephone procedures, business math and calculators, records management, PDA’s and voice technology.  Course instruction may include career shadowing field trips and/or Co-op work experience.  This class may be repeated for credit. (An EFE course).

 

Marketing Management

Course Number:  #109, #110, #111

Length of Course:  3 Trimesters – 1-1/2 Credits

Prerequisites:  Marketing I and students must complete an application by a set deadline

Grade Level:  12

This course offers practical hands on experience of operating a business.  Students are responsible for the management, bookkeeping, buying and stocking, visual merchandising, and sales and promotion for a real business.  Students will also be exposed to community service, leadership activities and job skills.  Students will have the opportunity and will be encouraged to participate in DECA.

 

Multimedia – BMA II

Length of Course:  3 Trimesters  - 1-1/2 Credits

Prerequisites:  None

Grade Level:  11 – 12

This course will prepare students to utilize up-to-date technology to produce a variety of media such as text, graphics, sound and animation. 

course includes:  web page development, advanced desktop publishing and digital design as well as operating our class company, Parchment DeZigns.   HTML, FrontPage, Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Macromedia MX (Flash, DreamWeaver, Fireworks, etc.), Paint Shop Pro, and advanced voice technology will be studied and utilized.  Course instruction will include career shadowing field trips and/or Co-op work experience.  This class may be repeated for credit. (An EFE course).

 

Small Business Accounting

Course Number:  #112

Length of Course:  1 Trimester – ½ Credit

Prerequisites:    None

Grade Level:  10 – 12

This course will focus on the organization and management of accounting procedures for a small business.  Students will learn general ledger entries, simple financial forms and commonly used accounting terms.  This is a great class for work and college-bound students.

 

Shop Talk- Business Communications

Course Number:  #130

Length of Course:  1 Trimester – ½ Credit

Prerequisites:  Computer Literacy/Computer Applications or Equivalency Exam

Grade Level:  10 – 12

This course is designed to focus on communication required in all workplace settings giving students hands-on-experiences in “real-world” communication.  The use of computers, especially WORD, POWERPOINT, EXCEL, and the Internet, will be an integral part of this class.  Topics covered will include speaking, listening, and telephoning; various styles of letters and memorandums; presentations, technical reports, and lots of composing.  Also, modes of communication and proper communication methods using various modes (PDA’s, e-mail, fax, etc.) will be covered.  In addition, conflict resolution, negotiations and ethics will be discussed.

 

Business Management, Marketing and Technology Co-op

Course Number:  #113, #114, #115

Length Of Course: 3 Trimesters

Corequisite:  Marketing Management or Business Technology II or Multimedia II

Prerequisites:  Completion of a related first year course.

Grade Level:  12

This capstone opportunity is designed for students who have developed entry-level job skills in the Business programs to work in local businesses.  The Co-op Coordinator, together with the employer, will set up a work/school schedule, not to exceed 52 hours per week in combination with school.
